History

The New Community Baptist Church was founded in 1950 by Earnest T. Cox in the home of Brother & Sister Davis on Columbus Street in the Fourth Ward of Houston, TX. Church services were also held in a house on Robins and Mason Street. The membership soon outgrew the house on Robins and moved to larger quarters at 1301 Andrew Street also in the Fourth Ward of Houston.

In 1961, the church moved to 1801 Creston Street and continued to move forward under the leadership of Pastor Cox.  Several members were added to the church.

Pastor Cox's health began to fail in 1970, and he was unable to continue to pastor the church.  Brother Albert Taylor, Brother Antoine Wright, fellow deacons, and other ministers held the church together until Rev. Lodet was called as pastor.  After a year, he resigned to accept the pastorate of another church.  Once again, Brother Taylor and Brother Wright continued to work with the church to hold the congregation together.

In 1973, Rev. L. A. Kennedy moved to Houston from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was soon asked to accept the role of full-time pastor at New Community, and he gladly accepted. He devised a program for the official board and the church. Many auxiliaries and faithful members were added to the church and along with several outreach programs.

The church purchased property at the present location on North Wayside Drive and built a new sanctuary in 1977.  Due to rapid growth of the ministry Pastor Kennedy was led by God to build again.  This time with the help of faithful members he built a 1500 seat sanctuary.

On August 29, 2010, Pastor Kennedy retired and passed the torch of ministry to his son-in-law, Pastor Lawrence E. Woods, and Pastor Woods was installed on September 19, 2011. For over sixty (60) years, New Community Baptist Church has been committed to continuing their efforts for improving the quality of life for the people in the community they serve by, "Building people who will build their community."
